. the president cutting short his vacation leaving michelle and the girls behind as he gets back to work to try to prevent tax increases and spending cuts due to begin next week. there's just one problem. it appears there would be no house republicans to help hammer out a deal. the gop leadership has not yet called their members back to d.c. and will not be in session tomorrow for legislative business. according to one gop aide, they felt it's up to the democrats to act now. so the christmas spirit has not softened actions. but what has softened? customer confidence. in the last week gallup found the drop in the likelihood congress will come to a deal. also holiday spending hit its lowest rate since the 2008 recession. while the president said before he left for hawaii that he said he hoped the holiday would give them a chance to cool off and reach an agreement, it appears republicans would prefer to stay home for the holidays. merry christmas, everybody. for more on this, joining us now from washington, we have contributor jared bernstein. also a senior fellow on budget and policy priorities.

served there under the leadership of speaker o'neill, majority leader michel and then jim wright and michel, a republican, there was no way they would consider doing a vote with the majority the majority. they wanted to get 218 votes. that's what they did on reforming social security. that's what they did on virtually everything. get democrats and republicans together and get 218 votes. that's the challenge i gave to the speaker today, speaker boehner. let the house vote. if they voted overwhelmingly, mr. president, one republican suggested, one republican house member that more than half of the republicans in the house would vote for giving the tax security to people who make less than $250,000 a year. so i say let's have speaker boehner call upon the republicans in the house to add 25 or so votes to what the democrats would do, and you'd have 218 votes and we could go on to taking care of the fiscal cliff. mr. president, my friend protests too much. the senate is broken and needs to be fixed and we need to change the rules. we change them all the time. last year we changed the

. you know, people here woke up this morning, brooke, to a letter from the first lady michelle obama. she penned a letter to newtown in the local paper here. i want to read you part of it, very eloquent. the first lady saying, please know that every minute of every day we are thinking of you and praying for you and holding you and your families in our hearts as you begin the slow and wrenching work of healing and moving forward. and that's just beginning. i mean, this is so raw. five more funerals still today. there say memorial service being held across the street from where i am. we're seeing children, families coming here to look. we're seeing signs like this one that really stands out to me. sorry, hon. little kids behind me. but we are sandy hook, we choose love. and this makeshift memorial is so telling. it has grown across the street. it has grown blocks down from here and it is just continuing to grow day by day by day. >> it is the adults leaving the flowers, but also the itty-bitty children coming by, perhaps with little ones of sandy hook, perhaps they know the story. you
